Harvest Donations

Our Harvest Festival Assembly will be taking place on Friday 23rd October, and we are planning on making the same donation requests as last year. We ask all families in Years 4, 5 and 6 to fill a decorated shoebox with foodie treats: a small box of chocolates, a packet of fancy biscuits, lovely jams or chutneys for example. The recipients of your generosity are elderly and housebound residents of Kew, and the gifts will be hand-delivered by small groups of Year 6 children during the afternoon of Friday 23rd. We are grateful to the Kew Neighbourhood Association which supports us in identifying those in need. All other year groups are asked to give donations of food which will be delivered to Richmond Food Bank. Please follow this link to see a list of food currently needed: Richmond Food Bank Donations. All donations will be collected in the Atrium during the week beginning 19th October. Year 6 parents are invited to join us for the assembly at 9am and we anticipate it will be finished by 10.15am. Year 6 parent volunteers are also needed to support the children with making the deliveries. Thank you in advance for your generosity in supporting our Harvest causes.

Author Visit – Nat Harrison

On Wednesday 7th October 2026, we will be visited by a local children’s author, Nat Harrison, for a talk about her book called The Girl who Raced the World. A timeless tale of travel, treachery and trust, this page-turning adventure brings Jules Verne’s classic Around The World in Eighty Days to life for young readers with a thrilling twist.

All books will be provided by The Alligator’s Mouth and must be purchased in advance. If you would like to pre-order your book,  click here to purchase “The Girl who Raced the World” Book.

To avoid disappointment on the day, please ensure you pre-order your copy before 6th October so Nat can sign and dedicate the book to your child. There will not be copies available to buy on the day.

It promises to be a wonderful experience for the children in Y3 to Y6 and will hopefully encourage their love of reading.

Highlights

Pupil Experience

It has been a busy week for our Pupil Council, who had their first meeting on Monday to share their thoughts for the year ahead. The children were energetic, thoughtful and excited to make some of their ideas a reality.

One of those ideas was to work together within their houses to create some artwork to represent the spirit of Palmer, Mead and Rose House. This week it was Palmer’s turn to gather in the Broomfield Room to create their masterpiece. As you will see from the picture, the results were quite amazing, and showed such creativity and teamwork. There will be more to come in the next couple of weeks as Mead and Rose flex their artistic muscles!

Eco Club

This week we started our Eco session discussing our finds from last week’s litter pick including the plastics we collected. This led us to discuss the impact plastics have on our oceans and the marine wildlife. We shared how even the smallest of plastic can infiltrate the food chain and have a big impact on marine life. The Eco team were then tasked on making their own marine creatures from fish to turtles they got creative. Please see their wonderful creations attached.

With 8-9 million tonnes of plastic dumped in the ocean every year we need to stop littering and the use of single use plastics.

Languages Day

On Wednesday we celebrated the European Day of Languages with a special assembly. We learnt that, although there are many differences, our languages also have many things in common. For example where in English a lack of understanding may be expressed by ‘It’s all Greek to me!’  for the Germans it’s ‘Spanish’,  for the Spanish and Hungarians it’s Chinese, for the French it’s ‘Hebrew’ and for the Poles it’s ‘a Turkish sermon’. Some of the Year 6 children shared versions in their own languages of different sayings. The children were amused to learn that the Portuguese version of ‘Once bitten twice shy’ is ‘Cão picado por cobra, tem medo de linguiça’ – a dog that has been bitten by a snake fears sausages.

There is a poster competition to illustrate this year’s theme which is ‘Languages Unite!’ This can use artwork, symbols and quotes to reflect how languages bring people together and serve as a vehicle for reaching across linguistic and cultural divides.

The closing date for entries to the poster competition is Monday 12th October.

Well done to Kaira for being the first to hand in her poster!

Kindergarten

This week in Kindergarten we had a SECRET PIZZA PARTY! The children all participated with enthusiasm and excitement! Everyone tasted all the ingredients kindly prepared by the kitchen and Chef John. They picked their favourite toppings and added them on top of their own pizza! This experience allowed us to further extend our learning about the 5 senses and initiated the discussion about our “Understanding of the World” topic about Healthy eating. We then ate them for snack and everyone agreed that our PIZZAS were DELICIOUS!!!!!!!

Year 2

This half term’s PSHE focus has been on Being Me in my World, and this week we looked at Rewards and Consequences. Children worked in groups to discuss negative choices, suggested alternative positive/helpful ones and also what the appropriate consequences might be.

Year 3

Year 3 have been fantastic historians this week! We have continued our exploration of the Ancient Egyptians, learning all about the pyramids and even creating our own pyramids using sugar cubes! The children discovered how geometry played a role in pyramid construction, including how a set square could be used, while also developing their teamwork skills. Also, I have been so impressed by this week’s homework – the children created wonderful, informative fact files which are now displayed proudly outside of our classroom. Keep up the excellent work, Year 3!

Year 5 - Geography

In Year 5 we have been learning about biomes so this week, we made our own! We planted small plants in a jar with gravel for drainage, activated charcoal as a filter, soil, moss and stones. We then sprayed the plant with water and closed the jar.

The jars will be checked and misted every couple of weeks and hopefully our plants will thrive in their mini-biomes!

Year 5 - Go Ape

On Thursday, the children in Year 5 took part in a team-bonding day at ‘Go Ape!’ in Battersea Park.  Thankfully, the sun shone and everyone had a great day.  Mrs Zammit was extremely proud of the whole class, all of whom demonstrated real collaboration, supporting and encouraging each other as they worked through the various challenges.

Art Work Of The Week

Year 2 have been working on self-portraits, developing their observational skills and exploring the different elements of the face in greater detail. The children had the opportunity to practise their felt-tip drawing techniques and experiment with different colour combinations. As a result, we have created some beautifully accomplished yet expressive portrait drawings, each reflecting the children’s individual creativity.

Music Matters

During our Friday assembly last week, Miss Crawford (woodwind and piano teacher) introduced the school to a whole range of different woodwind instruments. She delighted us with some well known and some less familiar tunes on the various instruments. Parents who are interested in having a trial lesson arranged for their child for any of the featured woodwind instruments (bassoon, dood, clarinet, flute, oboe, saxophone) should email Miss Fourie to express an interest.

Assembly Performance

Kaira Y5 performed a beautiful piano piece, ‘ Lift me up’ in assembly this morning. It was a great way to end the week. Well done and thank you, Kaira!
