BHS Fireside Lecture Series

Fireside Lecture Series

Let’s talk about children and their smartphones.

In partnership with our PTA, we are excited to launch the BHS Fireside Lecture Series. For our first session, we are delighted to welcome Jennifer Powers from PAPAYA, who will deliver an engaging talk on the challenges and opportunities of raising children in a digital age.
When: Thursday, 6th February at 6:30 PM – entry from 6.15pm.
Where: Broomfield House School, Hall
Reserve your seat here.
This opening lecture, titled “A Smartphone-Free Childhood,” will explore key topics such as:
  • The impact of smartphones on mental health and well-being.
  • Strategies for achieving a healthy balance with technology at home.
  • How parents and schools can work together to create healthy online habits.
The session will be led by Jennifer Powers (an ex-Broomfield parent). Jennifer is a strategy and policy consultant with over 20 years of experience in energy, infrastructure, and technology. She was a Special Adviser to Prime Minister Boris Johnson on energy, regulation, and business policy.
Jennifer will draw on her expertise to provide thoughtful, non-judgemental insights into how families can navigate these complex issues. There will also be time for questions and discussion.
PAPAYA, a charity dedicated to promoting adolescent wellness, helps parents and young people develop healthy relationships with technology through practical solutions like delaying smartphones, setting boundaries, and promoting safe internet use.
We look forward to seeing you there for what promises to be a thought-provoking and informative evening!

Highlights

Lunar New Year

On Wednesday, we celebrated Lunar New Year! It was wonderful to hear about the traditions shared by our children and families across the school. Year 2 children shared their knowledge, confidently presenting in front of their class. It was a fantastic opportunity for everyone to learn more about this special celebration.

Lunar New Year in Kindergarten

Kindergarten had a wonderful afternoon celebrating Lunar New Year on Wednesday. Parents visited the children in the classroom and ran a carousel of brilliant activities. The children designed paper plate dragons, carefully coloured in snake pictures, created balloon snakes and played drums and danced. A huge thank you to all the parents who organised activities and contributed to a wonderful celebration!

Happy Birthday Mr. Anstey

During Wednesday’s assembly, we surprised Mr Anstey with a special birthday celebration! The whole school, from Pre-Kindergarten to Year 6, along with staff, came together to congratulate him.

Eco Club

At Eco Club this week, we explored the importance of wetlands in nature. With World Wetlands Day approaching on 2nd February, we discussed why these ecosystems are vital – from providing essential habitats for wildlife to helping prevent flooding and storing carbon.

The children shared their experiences of visiting the Wetland Centre in Barnes, recalling sightings of birds, otters, and other wildlife. Inspired by our discussion, they chose a wetland mammal, reptile, bird, or amphibian to draw, along with a few facts about their chosen species.

To celebrate World Wetlands Day, families can apply for one free ticket to a wetland centre between 27th January and 2nd February here.

Art Highlight

PK looked at mark making with ink and decorated snakes for the Lunar New Year. They created a background with a firework design arranging colours in circles. PK also designed portrait collages where the children used a variety of materials. They practised their arranging and sticking skills while reflecting on the different elements of a portrait.
