The Children’s Commissioner, Rachel de Souza, has published a helpful guide for parents and carers on managing children’s everyday online habits. Developed with direct input from children and young people, the guide aims to support families in having regular, open conversations about life online and digital communication.
Although written primarily with teenagers in mind, it contains a number of useful ideas, practical suggestions and conversation starters that many parents of prep school aged children may also find valuable as children begin to access digital devices and online communication more independently.
We know that many Broomfield families are strong supporters of phone-free childhoods and take a thoughtful approach to technology use. However, it is also important to recognise that communication between peers can still take place through a range of other devices and platforms, including tablets, gaming devices, smart watches and shared family technology.
At Broomfield, we believe that developing positive online behaviour is just as important as developing kindness, respect and responsibility in person. As children are increasingly given access to devices that allow communication with others, regular conversations at home around appropriate communication, digital conduct and online kindness become particularly important.
We would also gently encourage families to ensure that any devices used for communication remain open and transparent, with appropriate parental oversight and regular checks of messages, apps and online activity. Children benefit enormously when adults remain actively involved in helping them navigate the online world safely and responsibly.
The guide can be accessed here:

As part of Broomfield House School’s 150th year, Mr Anstey will take on the challenge of running an extraordinary 100km (and a bit) across London on Friday 19th June, visiting Dukes Education schools along the route to raise funds for the Dukes Foundation Transformational Bursary Campaign.
Inspired by the brilliant children at Broomfield and across the wider Dukes family, and by the kindness, courage and community spirit they show so often, Mr Anstey felt it was important to have “skin in the game” and personally take on a challenge in support of a cause that creates opportunity for young people who need it most.
This is not about speed, records, or personal glory, all of these things are unlikely.
Instead, it is about using a difficult physical challenge to help shine a light on something far more important – widening access to transformational education and supporting children to flourish.
100km across London will require resilience, preparation, endurance and determination, qualities we speak about often with children at Broomfield, and values that sit at the heart of the Dukes Foundation’s work.
1 day. 1 city. 2 legs. 100km (and a bit).

We are delighted to offer an exclusive 6-week Yoga & Mindfulness Programme for children in Years 4 – 6 in the second half of the Summer term. The programme will be held before school on Monday mornings from 7.45 – 8.30am, in our beautiful pond patch when the weather is sunny and warm and the hall if the weather is inclement.
Miss Travis will be leading the Programme and is a qualified yoga teacher, sound practitioner, and breathwork instructor outside of her role as the Drama teacher at Broomfield House. Her background allows her to blend expression, movement, and mindfulness in a way that feels both engaging and grounding for children. Each session combines gentle yoga, guided breathwork and age-appropriate mindfulness practices. The sessions are carefully planned to feel both enriching and restorative, giving children space to unwind whilst developing essential lifelong skills. Yoga mats will be provided for the children and a continental breakfast. Children should wear something comfortable for the sessions and will be given time to change into their uniform afterwards.
There is a maximum number of spaces available so this will be on a first come first served basis.
Benefits for your child:
By the end of the programme, each child will hopefully develop a ‘calm toolkit’ a set of techniques that they will be able carry with them into school and home life.
Please let Mrs Hanen know by Thursday 21 May if you want your child to take part.
Year 5 Victorian Day – Thursday 18th June- Date for your diary
Our Year 5 pupils are stepping back in time for a fantastic Victorian Day on Thursday 18th June!
Throughout the day, children will experience what school life was like in the Victorian era. They will take part in a range of exciting activities, including traditional English and Maths lessons, an engaging drama session, a Victorian-style lunch, a PE lesson featuring drills and classic playground games and a lively music session inspired by the period.
We are also expecting a visit from some very strict Victorian teachers (Mrs Wrigley-Smith and Mr Anstey) so excellent behaviour and best manners will be essential!
To help bring the day to life, children are asked to come to school dressed in full Victorian costume. Think chimney sweeps, match girls, factory workers, or even Victorian nobility—we would love to see a wide range of creative outfits.
It promises to be a memorable and immersive day for all involved!
Our last PTA meeting of the year was held on Monday evening. The minutes will be out soon, however in the meantime Class reps should have followed up with everyone with key info including some actions. Thank!
It is a much-loved BHS tradition to welcome in the new school year with a picnic – a lovely chance for families and children to reconnect after the summer holidays.
We are pleased to confirm this year’s picnic will be taking place on Monday 31 August, from 3pm at North Sheen Recreation Ground. Do pop it in your diaries!
More details will follow from your new class reps for 2026-7. 🧺
We are on the lookout for enthusiastic new Core Team members – in particular from Year PK, Years 1, 3, 4 and 5 – as well as a new PTA Chair for the year ahead.
If you are interested in getting involved, or would simply like to find out more about what it entails, please do reach out to the current team. We would love to hear from you!

Our residential adventure got off to a fantastic start with an exciting first day of activities, including the thrilling Leap of Faith, orienteering, and team-building games in the evening. The first evening ended on a high with some astounding animal impressions and a lively water balloon game—aimed only at the teachers! The fun continued into an action-packed second day, which began with a special Happy Birthday celebration for Mrs Zammit, sung enthusiastically by all the children. The children then enjoyed a wonderfully bright and busy morning, taking part in indoor rock climbing, aeroball, high equilibrium challenges, problem-solving activities, fencing, disc golf and the zip wire. Throughout the experience, the children showed immense courage, perseverance and teamwork, constantly supporting and encouraging one another. With another fun-filled strategy and teamwork game to enjoy before bedtime, the energy and enthusiasm have been fantastic—what an unforgettable experience!
On Thursday 14th May we hosted our Lower School Summer Serenade for instrumentalists and some singers in Year 1 – Year 3.
It turned out to be a lovely summer’s evening. Thankfully the rain cleared up as 28 of our younger Broomfield children excitedly prepared to perform in front of an audience. Some of the children performed in front of an audience for the very first time.
We had a range of instruments including piano, dood, drums and also some young singers.
The joy of musicmaking was very clear for all to see and I am very proud of all the children who took part in the concert.
A special thank you to Miss Crawford, Mrs Fogg, Mr Johnson Mrs Pedley, Miss Bird, Miss Bendall and Mrs Thompson for their help and support on the night.
Please see the Parent Portal for more pictures from the night: Photo Galleries Details | Broomfield Parent Cloud Portal
At break time today, the children were invited to ‘drop in’ for a chat and to work together to create a piece of art. They made an incredible garden scene, and it was a wonderful chance for conversation, creativity and team work! Checking in with each other is so important, and it felt like a very fitting way to round off Mental Health Awareness Week. Mrs Harland is excited for her first meeting with the Pupil Council next week to discuss the suggestions in our Pupil ideas box, which has been filling up fast! If you have any new ideas, please speak to Mrs Harland or add them to the box in the atrium.
We had a vibrant and engaging Eco Club session, where everyone came together with great enthusiasm to prepare for next week’s Walk to School initiative. The group explored the many benefits of walking—not just for helping the environment by reducing pollution, but also for boosting our own health and wellbeing. Inspired by these discussions, our eco members got creative and produced eye-catching posters to spread the message and encourage others to get involved!

Year 3 have been busy developing their road awareness skills during their safe walking training this week. They showed fantastic enthusiasm as they learned how to cross roads safely, recognise potential hazards, and make sensible decisions when near traffic. The children practised important skills such as stopping, looking, and listening, and demonstrated great teamwork and responsibility throughout. We are incredibly proud of their positive attitudes and growing confidence in staying safe while walking in our community!
After a soggy start, PK made the most of their day by enjoying a cosy indoor picnic before heading outside to soak up the sun and sand in the playground. The children were full of excitement as they explored the beautiful plants in the glasshouse, delighting in discovering leaves that were even bigger than themselves! A big thank you to the parents who came along to support the trip.
The children in Pre-Kindergarten created colourful bunny portraits. They explored the shapes used to create a portrait, practised their ink painting skills, and reflected on colour combinations.
