Whole School

First Day of Summer Term

Tuesday 21 April – On our first day back of the Summer Term – There will be NO SWIMMING. Instead, all children should wear their summer uniforms as we look forward to welcoming the warmer weather. If you are in need of any uniform, we have a brilliant second hand shop in the school. Please email and purchase it from the PTA Uniform: PTAuniform@broomfieldhouse.com

Online Games and Social Media

Online games

We would like to remind parents of the importance of regularly checking parental controls on gaming platforms such as Roblox and Minecraft. Many of these apps include features that allow players to communicate with others online, which could expose children to inappropriate content or interactions if not properly managed. Please take a moment to review privacy settings, chat permissions, and account restrictions to help ensure a safe and positive gaming experience for your child.

Social media

We would also like to remind parents and carers to be mindful of social media use with their child. All of our pupils are below the minimum legal age to use social media platforms and most popular platforms require users to be at least 13 years old.

These age limits exist to protect children from inappropriate content, unwanted contact, and online risks.

We strongly encourage parents to:

  1. Ensure children are not accessing age-restricted social media platforms.
  2. Use parental controls on phones, tablets, games consoles and home Wi-Fi.
  3. If children have devices, keep these out of bedrooms overnight where possible.
  4. Talk regularly with your child about what they are watching, sharing and who they are communicating with.
  5. Agree clear boundaries around screen time and online behaviour

Open conversations and shared expectations help children develop healthy, responsible digital habits and ensure that technology remains a positive and safe part of their lives.

Brass Instrument Trials

On Tuesday 28 April, children in Year 4 and Year 5 will have the opportunity to try a brass instrument. As we anticipate these short 10 minute ‘taster sessions’ to be very popular, we ask parents to express interest in their child trying out the trumpet and trombone by emailing Miss Fourie directly. This will enable Miss Fourie to put together a schedule so that Mr Clarke (our fantastic brass teacher) is able to see as many children for a trial session on the day. This is a great opportunity for our Year 4 and Year 5 children not to be missed!

Over-excited children will be streaming out of the school gates today ready for the Easter holidays. If you have no carefully timetabled programme of events to keep them occupied, don’t worry, here with a round-up of the latest openings, Easter drop-in activities and suggestions for days out. Plus, Spring fairs, family films and, of course, the ubiquitous Easter bunny. Happy holidays.
We’ve delightedly spent our time sifting through the crop of new shows in London so that we can recommend the ones we think are worth a family outing. On that front, Rose Wylie: The Picture Comes First which opens at the Royal Academy on Saturday, will surely be a hit with kids.

PTA Quiz Night - A Night to Remember

Last night, the BHS PTA Quiz went off-site for the very first time, taking over the Kew Gardens Hotel for an evening of questionable general knowledge and surprisingly competitive parachute-making.

Our quiz stalwarts Andrew and Amanda had brain cells ticking across great representation from PK, KG, 2, 4, 5 and 6 – plus a Staff & Teachers team along for the ride. PTA Secretary Mairi opened proceedings with an intro that had the room in stitches. Stand-up comedy career incoming? Watch this space (future PTA event, anyone?).

The music round nearly ground to a halt after a few tech issues – thankfully Amanda stepped in to sing the tracks herself. Commitment to the cause doesn’t get much better than that.

Questions ranged from the surprisingly tricky to the completely unfair – did you know sharks have zero bones? Or that JPEG stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group? Neither did most of us, and we’re fine with that.

The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the parachute-making round, which turned out to be perfectly suited to the height of the pub ceiling. Year 5’s team “Smarter than a 5th Grader” brought some serious physics knowledge to bear, crafted the winning parachute – and then went on to steal the overall Quiz crown from the teachers. The teachers were unavailable for comment.

A huge thank you to everyone who came out and supported what was a brilliant evening. Many thanks to our fantastic quiz masters for all their efforts.

Years 1 & 3 – you missed out!

Silent Auction - final hours!

We have raised an incredible £4,000 so far – thank you to everyone who has bid! The auction closes tonight at 8pm, so there’s still time to get in there.

For the first time this year, we have extended bidding in place. If an item receives a bid in the final 3 minutes, the closing time automatically extends by 3 minutes – so no need to hover anxiously at the end! You’ll always have time to respond if you’re outbid.

Finally, as the Easter holidays begin, please do allow our wonderful auction team a little breathing space over the break to get items out to winners. We’ll be in touch!

Uniform stickers

Lost property is a constant challenge in schools, and name labels make a real difference in getting items back to their owners. When ordering labels for uniforms, shoes, water bottles and lunchboxes, you can also support Broomfield House School PTA at no extra cost.

We are now partnering with two excellent name label companies- Stikins (our long-standing partner) and MyNameTags. Simply quote our fundraising number when ordering:

Both offer high-quality, durable labels that withstand countless washes. With half term approaching, it’s the perfect time to label everything before returning to school- an easy way to tick off an essential task while raising funds for the PTA!

Pupil Experience

Over the last term, the Pupil Council have been working hard at creating a child friendly Broomfield behaviour policy. Throughout the process, the children had the initiative to use the pupil voice to create our TOP TEN GOLDEN RULES. After collecting feedback over many playtimes, the team created the top ten rules and with the help of our Head Boy, Head Girl and House Captains, we decided to create our very own BROOMFIELD acrostic poem that reflected them. A huge congratulations to the Pupil Council who have gone above and beyond to devise a truly bespoke rhyming poem that echoes our school values so wonderfully well. Please find a copy of the poem below:

Be sure to use your best manners around our school and everywhere

Respect for one another by showing creativity, kindness, courage care

Other’s ideas are just important as ours, so listen to them politely

Of course take care of our classroom space to make it the best it can be

Make the world a better place

Face our fears and lead with grace

Independence and teamwork go hand in hand

Extraordinary work, using our talents and skills to learn and understand

Learn with an open heart, honest voice and a curious mind

Do right by one another, because here at Broomfield, we are one of a kind!

Spanish Fun

¡Qué bonito!

This year’s trip to Spain was definitely one to remember. The children had the most amazing time with 3 sessions of watersports, a hike to see some bunkers from ‘La Guerra civil’, a pool party, trip to the castle and to Águilas town, a talent show, cookery lesson, dance class and farewell/birthday party. We had fantastic weather and as always, the ‘monitores’ went above and beyond expectations keeping everyone entertained and practicing their Spanish. Everyone had a fabulous time.  ¿Sí o no, chicos?

Please see the parent portal for the amazing pictures from the trip: Photo Galleries Details | Broomfield Parent Cloud Portal

Rose House Raffle and Cake Sale

For the first time in history a Broomfield raffle and cake sale raised over £500 for charity! Massive congratulations and thanks to all pupils and parents who took part or  contributed to last week’s Rose house events. This magnificent sum is now being sent to Rose house’s chosen charity, the Butterfly Project in Uganda, to help young people become responsible and proactive members of the local community.

Ducklings

It has been a very exciting week at Broomfield as we welcomed five new students to our school community, five beautiful ducklings! The children across the school have thoroughly enjoyed observing their journey from eggs to hatching and now into lively little ducklings. It has been a wonderful opportunity for the children to learn about life cycles and to watch the ducklings grow so quickly.

The ducklings have now been officially named: Fluffy, Splash, Dinky, Daisy, and Quack. We look forward to continuing to watch them grow and seeing the joy they bring to the school.

Year 2 Forest School

Year 2 embraced new challenges at Forest School, while also developing practical skills. One of the highlights was using a billhook to cut wood again. The children were re-introduced to this traditional tool and reminded how to handle it with care and respect. With close supervision, they practised controlled movements, focusing on the technique of how to position the wood securely and make steady, deliberate cuts. We also had an exciting introduction to archery. For many, it was their first time holding a bow; we began by learning the basics of how to stand with a balanced stance, hold the bow correctly and aim with focus. A key emphasis was on taking our time; drawing the bow slowly, keeping the arm holding the bow straight and concentrating on the target. The children showed great determination and it was fantastic to see their progress with each attempt. Throughout the session, the children supported one another and celebrated each other’s achievements.

Science Day

Our recent Science Day was a fantastic success! We were thrilled to welcome Mother Nature Science to the school for a full day of hands-on workshops and exciting experiments, which began with an energetic ‘Superhero Show’ in assembly. Throughout the day, pupils took part in engaging sessions and experiments. Kindergarten and KS1 thoroughly enjoyed the ‘Super Slime’ workshop, while KS2 explored ‘Our Diverse Planet.’ KS1 pupils were especially delighted to take their slime creations home, making it a memorable and fun-filled celebration of science for all!
