Spring Musicals - Years 3 and 4

We’re really looking forward to a fun evening of music, drama and storytelling as our Year 3 and Year 4 children perform their Spring Musicals.

The evening will begin with the Year 3 production, It’s All Greek to Me!  A lively and comedic presentation inspired by the world of Ancient Greece. The children have been working hard to bring the songs and stories to life. After the interval, Year 4 will perform Grimm the Musical, a magical journey through some of the well-known fairy tales from the Brothers Grimm. With plenty of colourful characters and hilarious moments, it promises to be a great way to finish the evening.

Children should be dropped off at 5:30pm. Parents will be able to come into the hall from 5:50pm, and the performances will begin at 6:00pm. There will be an interval halfway through the evening. We look forward to seeing you there, if you have any questions, please email office@broomfieldhouse.com or htravis@broomfieldhouse.com

This Sunday is, of course, Mothering Sunday. Time to think about mums and carers past and present, to remember and to say thank you. Celebrated in the UK since the 16th century, it was originally a time for people to return to their ‘mother’ church, for families to get together and celebrate the start of Spring. Over time, it developed into a day to spend time with your own mother, to give her a small gift and show appreciation.
2026 is the National Year of Reading, making World Book Day an especially big day. This year it is all about encouraging children to read for pleasure. It doesn’t matter what your kids are reading about; if it is something that genuinely interests them they are far more likely to stick at it. Ditto, how they read – magazines, comic strips – bring them on!
We’ve delightedly spent our time sifting through the crop of new shows in London so that we can recommend the ones we think are worth a family outing. On that front, Rose Wylie: The Picture Comes First which opens at the Royal Academy on Saturday, will surely be a hit with kids.

Highlights

Interhouse Swimming Gala 2026

The Broomfield House Interhouse Swimming Gala took place at Teddington Pool on 11th March 2026, with pupils representing the three houses: Palmer, Rose and Mead. The atmosphere was fantastic as swimmers competed in a range of exciting races, demonstrating great determination and team spirit throughout the afternoon.

There were some closely contested individual events, but the relays were undoubtedly the highlight of the gala, with teams cheering loudly from the poolside and every swimmer giving their best effort for their house. The energy and encouragement from teammates made for a wonderful sporting occasion.

After a series of thrilling races and outstanding performances from all houses, Palmer emerged as the overall winner and proudly celebrated lifting the Interhouse Swimming Cup. Well done to all swimmers who took part for their enthusiasm and excellent effort

Pupil Experience - Beyond World Book Day

Today, the finalists from our World Book Day competition visited Dukes House and represented Broomfield at the Dukes Beyond World Book Day competition. A huge congratulations to Aria, Bo, Georgina, Max, Gabby, Rihanna, Tamara and Camila for showcasing their ‘Day in the Life’ projects with the utmost pride. A special thank you to Mrs Matthewson and Miss Doherty for getting the children to and from the event safely and for championing the children every step of the way!

Year 2 Trip to London Museum of Water & Steam

Year 2 enjoyed a fantastic trip to the London Museum of Water & Steam. They stepped back into the Victorian era and took part in a traditional washing day, discovering how hard laundry was before modern machines. The children tried out old washing tools themselves and gained a new appreciation for today’s simple “press‑a‑button” approach! They also explored the interactive Waterworks Gallery, experimenting with how water moves and creates power. After lunch, the Splash Zone offered more hands-on fun with pumps, fountains and flowing water. The day ended with a tour of the museum’s enormous steam pumping engines, which once supplied clean water to Victorian London. It was a wonderful day full of history, science and discovery—and Year 2 returned with lots of new knowledge and appreciation for modern life.

Well Done Sarita

This half term, we have been learning about Buddhism in our Wednesday RE assembly. This week, Sarita shared some of the special objects that hold meaning for her as a Buddhist.  She also explained that her grandparents in Thailand have lots of statues of Buddha in their garden, but that these must be raised off the ground as a mark of respect.  Thank you Sarita for sharing your religion with us and for speaking so confidently in front of the school.

Eco Club Update

In Eco Club this week, we continued our discussions about litter by exploring what happens to it, after it’s dropped. The children created storyboards showing the life cycle of different types of litter. Earlier in the term, Magnus had shown an interest in the Mariana Trench, and we discovered an unfortunate connection—plastic pollution has even been found at its deepest point. The children illustrated this idea through their own examples, including Magnus’s “life of a crisp packet” and Emilia’s journey of a banana skin.

Year 5 Trip to the Globe Theatre

On Thursday, Year 5 had a very enjoyable trip to the Globe Theatre in London.  In class, they have been learning about Shakespeare and his plays and so were able to both ask and answer lots of questions about the bard and his plays – particularly Hamlet!  After a guided tour of the theatre, the children enjoyed a workshop about Elizabethan clothing, comparing the garments of the rich and poor through two contrasting female characters from Shakespeare’s plays: Ophelia and Rosalind.

Year 6 Trip to Holly Lodge

As part of their preparation for starting secondary school, the Year 6 class visited Holly Lodge in Richmond Park to attend a Junior Citizens’ day.  The children worked in small groups to learn top safety tips first hand from emergency service workers. The event included talking to the police, the fire brigade, TFL as well as council officers. The afternoon presented a fantastic opportunity for the children to both work as a team and experience how to deal with different types of dangerous situations, whilst getting to know their local first responders.

Y2 Scooter Training

Year 2 took part in scooter training this week and had a brilliant time building their road‑safety awareness and riding skills. The children learned how to balance confidently, start and stop safely, look out for hazards and navigate simple manoeuvres such as gliding, controlled braking and turning. They worked in two groups, practising these skills through fun, practical activities. Everyone came well prepared with their scooters and helmets and we are grateful to families who supported by sharing equipment where needed.

FSA Karate Cup

On Sunday, several Broomfield children took part in the FSK Karate Cup, organised by FSK Karate. For many of the Year 2 children it was their first competition and, although they were understandably nervous, they did very well. In the paired kata event, competitors perform a sequence of choreographed karate movements together in pairs, demonstrating precision, timing and technique. Two Year 2 pairs came away with their first karate medals: Gabby & Ryan and Elena & Tamara, both winning bronze medals. Felix (Year 3) also won a bronze medal in the punch bag competition. Well done to all the Broomfield pupils who took part and represented the school so well.

FSK Karate run karate lessons at Broomfield on Wednesday and Thursday mornings, and children are welcome to sign up to take part. You can find out more here: https://fskuk.co.uk 🥋

Well done Joy

We received news this week of Joy (Y4) being awarded a Dinstinction in her Grade 4 ABRSM piano exam recently. This is an outstanding result and a testament to Joy’s consistent hard work to prepare for the exam. We are very proud of her and look forward to hearing her perform one of her pieces in one of our assemblies soon. Well done Joy!

Artwork of the Week

The children in Year 5 copied artwork by various famous artists and reflected on their technical choices. They developed their observational skills, closely examining the texture and surface of their chosen pieces, as well as analysing the artists’ use of colour. As a result, they produced some stunning interpretations of well-known artworks.
