We want to make you aware of a recent issue affecting some popular children’s books by Andrew Cope, including the Spy Dogs, Spy Cats, and Spy Pups series.
Some editions of these books include a printed web address at the back. This link used to go to the author’s website, but the domain is no longer under his control. It has since been taken over by another party and now leads to inappropriate adult content.
The publisher, Puffin, has paused sales and distribution of the books and is working with schools, libraries, and retailers to remove copies from circulation. They have stressed that the website has no connection to the author or publisher.
What this means for you:
We recommend talking with your child about the importance of not following web addresses in books without checking with an adult first.

Our Harvest Festival Assembly will be taking place on Friday 24th October and we are planning on making the same donation requests as last year. We ask all families in Years 4, 5 and 6 to fill a decorated shoebox with foodie treats: a small box of chocolates, a packet of fancy biscuits, lovely jams or chutneys for example. The recipients of your generosity are elderly and housebound residents of Kew, and the gifts will be hand-delivered by small groups of Year 6 children during the afternoon of Friday 24th. We are grateful to the Kew Neighbourhood Association which supports us in identifying those in need. All other year groups are asked to give donations of food which will be delivered to Richmond Food Bank. Please follow this link to see a list of food currently needed: https://richmond.foodbank.org.uk/give-help/donate-food/. All donations will be collected in the Atrium during the week beginning 20th October. Year 6 parents are invited to join us for the assembly at 9am and we anticipate it will be finished by 10.15am. Year 6 parent volunteers are also needed to support the children with making the deliveries. Thank you in advance for your generosity in supporting our Harvest causes.
David Prior, professional photographer, will be joining us on Friday, 17th October to take photos around school for our school website and social media. He will be visiting lessons throughout the day and will take some small group shots. Please note that only children with full photo permission will be included. We look forward to capturing some wonderful portraits and memories.
If you have any questions or concerns about photo permissions, please let us know: tpakcan@broomfieldhouse.com.
A gentle reminder to parents that if you haven’t yet completed our HPL parent survey, please could you do this by 3rd November.
HPL is an evidence-based approach to teaching and learning which believes that all children are capable of high achievement. It focuses on developing not only academic skills, but also the attitudes and behaviours that help pupils to become confident, independent and lifelong learners.
As part of this introduction, we would like to gather your views through our first parent survey. Your feedback will help us to understand what you already know about HPL, how you feel about the approach, and how we can best involve you as partners in this journey.
The survey should only take a few minutes to complete, and your responses will be anonymous.

We look forward to welcoming families to our Discovery Morning—a wonderful chance to see our school in action and have all questions about Rising 3s and Pre-Kindergarten entry answered. The event is open to all parents interested in these entry points, whether they have visited before, or have never seen the school yet. Please feel free to share this invitation with any local friends who might like to join us on the day.
Please RSVP here.
Year 6 parents are invited to join us at 8.30 am on Friday 17th October in the Dining hall for an informal viewing of the Year 6 Victorian projects, which were made over the summer holiday. We look forward to seeing you there.

We would like to inform you that, as part a statutory obligation, our school is now required to work in partnership with the Metropolitan Police Service as part of their safeguarding initiative, Operation Encompass.
Operation Encompass is a national scheme that ensures schools are notified when a child (under the age of 18) has been exposed to or involved in a domestic incident. This may include situations where the child was not physically present but is part of the household. The notification is usually made to the school before the start of the next school day.
This information will be shared, in confidence, with a designated member of our safeguarding team; Miss Sangtabi (Designated Safeguarding Lead). The safeguarding team will then ensure appropriate support is in place to ensure the wellbeing of the child. Where necessary, we may be able to make provisions or adjustments to assist the child and their family.
We are committed to providing the highest level of care and support for all our pupils, and we believe that participating in Operation Encompass will help us to respond promptly and appropriately when children may need extra support.

👂 Vision & Hearing Screening
A huge well done to the 52 children who took part in this week’s vision and hearing checks. They all behaved impeccably — calm, polite, and a real credit to the school. Parents should be very proud! 👏
Parents will receive an email notification five working days after the testing day confirming that their child’s results have been uploaded to the Parent Portal at schoolhealthcheck.org.
Please log in using the same email address and password created when you first registered your child to view and download their report.
A big thank you to Emma Bickerstaffe, mum to Harry & Millie (Year 2) for organising this!

This week, we are celebrating outstanding achievements in this year’s ISA Art Competition: two First Prizes and one Highly Commended award!
Congratulations to Year 6 for their elaborate group project using recycled materials, clay and papier-mâché, Elena in Year 2 for her vibrant ink flower arrangement and Hilda in Year 5 for her beautiful still life of fruit.
Kindergarten had a blast at forest school. They used a palm drill to create small holes in conkers to create a collaborative conker snake. They carefully chopped up wood to create a fire and they created a delicious juice. Well done everyone!
This week in geography, Year 4 have been learning about rivers and a few children volunteered to share their work during our Wednesday assembly. Everyone has put a lot of effort into both the research and the design of their posters so look out for these going up on display around school.
Year 4 also had great fun in history as they started to make Viking shields.
This week Miss Bendall, Mr Kennedy and Mrs Zammit held house elections where the children passionately shared their ideas to land a place on the Pupil Council Team 2025. After hearing their ideas, I am certain that this year will be most memorable for the children and community alike…which is most fitting as it is Broomfield’s 150 years! I am pleased to share that our representatives for Rose House are Felix, Camilla and Ella; our representatives for Mead House are Fleur, Eita and Camila and our representatives for Palmer are Lily, Florence and Shanelle. The children got straight to school business and met with our governor David Goodhew in the Broomfield room this afternoon. They voiced the highlights of the year that they have already experienced and shared their hopes and dreams for the year ahead, being most persuasive to gather extra funding for some rather fabulous ideas! Watch this space.
The children in Year 1 had a glorious cultural celebration on Monday morning. They shared special stories and wore traditional clothing which made Monday extra memorable for us all. A special message from Bo and Bo’s family in Year 1: Chuseok (추석) — which is sometimes called the Korean Harvest Festival is one of the most important holidays in Korea, celebrated around the same time as the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival, but with slightly different customs. Chuseok is a time when families come together to give thanks for the harvest and to honour their ancestors. Traditionally, people travel to their hometowns, prepare special foods made from newly harvested rice, and share them with relatives and neighbours. One of the best-known dishes is songpyeon (송편) — half-moon-shaped rice cakes filled with sweet sesame seeds, beans, or chestnuts and steamed on a bed of pine needles, which gives them a lovely fragrance. Families also wear hanbok (한복) — colourful traditional clothing like the one Bo is wearing in the picture — and enjoy folk games such as circle dances, tug-of-war, and swings. The holiday usually lasts for three days, and it’s considered a joyful time to celebrate family, gratitude, and nature. A special thank you to Bo, Cathie, Everly and Emory in Year 1 for making it a Monday to remember!
