Thoughts from the Study

Welcome Back

A warm welcome back!

I’ll admit it, I really do have the greatest job in the world. There is nothing quite like the first day of a new academic year, full of possibility and excitement, to remind us why we are here and our purpose for the year ahead which is to give every child a world class education and experience.

Over the summer, we have invested significantly in our site and completed some exciting projects. Designing innovative school spaces has always fascinated me, and I can’t recall a summer in the past 20 years when I haven’t been part of a major development.

Innovation is often associated with technology, but just as powerful is the role of design thinking in creating environments that inspire learning. At Broomfield, we have embraced this approach over the past five years, re-imagining our environment while preserving the history and traditions that give our buildings their unique character. From refurbished Early Years classrooms, the library and now famous ‘pond patch’, to communal areas, full classroom makeovers, and enhanced technological capability, each project has been guided by empathy for the user, our children and teachers, and a belief that (as we teach the children) challenges can be reframed as opportunities.

Just before midnight on Wednesday, we put the finishing touches to the new Harrow House spaces. In my experience, no one is more honest than a three year old, so I confess I was anxious to see their verdict. Thankfully, the children are delighted (Phew!) and we are now officially home to, ‘probably the best toilets in any school, quite possibly in the world!’.

Thoughtful design fosters engagement, collaboration, and joy. Every detail matters, because children deserve the very best conditions in which to flourish. At its heart, this is design thinking in action, with a touch of Farrow and Ball for good measure. Having spent more hours than I’d like to admit in their design stores over the summer, if I were ever called onto Mastermind (unlikely), their colour chart might just be my specialist subject.

Over the past five years, sustainability has also been a key strategic priority for us. We have been on a journey to make the school far more energy efficient, with the aim of eliminating our reliance on gas across the site. I am therefore pleased that the work completed this summer brings us much closer to that ambition. We now have only two small boilers remaining and a single gas oven, which will also be replaced soon. We will continue to focus on improving the sustainability credentials of our school site, ensuring that progress in this area remains a central part of our long term vision.

This term also marks the opening of our new Rising 3s space, where we are thrilled to welcome new families and new colleagues. Joining the Early Years team are Mrs Audrey Bradley and Mrs Ann Wong.

Mrs Bradley, who will be based in Pre-Kindergarten and the Rising 3s, brings over 18 years experience in Early Years education, most recently as Lead Teacher and Head of Training at Sheen Montessori Nursery. She is a fully qualified teacher with an International Diploma in Montessori Pedagogy and a Montessori leadership coaching qualification, and completed her teaching induction at University College London.

Mrs Wong joins us from Kew College, working in Kindergarten, and holds a Level 2 teaching assistant qualification and is continuing her studies towards her Level 3 qualification in the year ahead. Both bring warmth and expertise, further strengthening our outstanding Early Years team led by Miss Sangtabi.

We also welcome Mrs Olivia Hanen as our new Front of House. With a background as an Operations Manager in pharmaceuticals and previously as Concessions Manager at Luxury fashion house Christian Louboutin, she brings a wealth of experience that will help us refine our operations and continue to provide the level of service and attention to detail our families deserve.

Before the children returned, staff spent two days in professional development, focusing on curriculum and the launch of High Performance Learning. This framework, which aligns closely with the Broomfield approach, is built on the belief that every child can achieve highly. It will shape both our teaching and the language we use around learning, building skills that not only deliver strong academic outcomes but also foster wellbeing, character, and agency. Over the next two years, we shall be working towards The World Class School Award, designed for schools that aspire to reach the absolute pinnacle of educational excellence, ensuring that they stand as exemplars in the global educational landscape. This pathway is for schools that want to build on their current successes and adopt innovative strategies to drive pupil achievement and teaching expertise to new heights. High Performance Learning is being lead by Miss Curran, one of our highly experience teachers and part of the Year 6 team.

We are also delighted to extend Quest assessment across the school this year. Following a two year pilot with selected year groups, Quest has proven to be a powerful tool for gathering nationally benchmarked data and using it to inform teaching. The success of this innovation, which began here at Broomfield, has now led to its adoption across all Dukes schools, recognition of best practice at an international level. Parents will hear more about both High Performance Learning and Quest as the term progresses.

It has been wonderful to catch up with so many parents this week and to hear about your summers. Please do stop for a chat at the school gate or up on the Top Patch whenever you have the chance, I would be delighted to share more about what has been achieved over the summer and our priorities for the year ahead.

All the best for a great weekend.

Run Club Park Run

Broomfield Run Club started back in the lovely autumn sunshine this morning and everyone enjoyed being back. We will be taking part (finally!) is our first ever Park Run as a run club. We will be attending the Junior Park Run on Sunday 28th September at 9am at Moormead Park. The children run by themselves and receive a time (Adults can run too but time is not recorded on Park Run). Some of our staff will attend the run, however parents are responsible for their children during the event. More information to follow and this will hopefully be the first of many Park Runs for BRC.

Alexi running for Great Ormond Street Hospital

Our very own Run Clubber Alexi (Y6) will be running in the Richmond Kids Mile 2025 on Sunday, 14th September, to raise money for Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity.

We thought it might be nice to share this with our school community as this is such a special charity. His fundraising page can be found here:👉 https://www.justgiving.com/page/alexiskaragiannopoulos

Thank you very much for your support.

Hi Everyone,

We hope you’ve survived Week 1 — and that your child has come home with everything they set off with! We’ve planned a fun-packed Autumn term and hope you’ll join us at one (or more!) of the upcoming events: the Macmillan Coffee (donate here), Mums’ Social, or Dads’ Social this month. Most events are listed on the Classlist app, and where tickets are needed, we’re trialling payments through Classlist too — so far it’s proving much easier for everyone when it comes to ticket purchasing.

Our first PTA Meeting of the year will be on Monday 15th September, followed by a Reps Induction. We’re also looking for a new PTA Treasurer, a Summer Fair Lead, and a small team to help with the Auction. If you’re interested, please reach out to Sara (PTA Chair) or Mairi (PTA Secretary).

Looking ahead, we’re planning an all-school Christmas Social. The date and venue will be confirmed soon (we know it feels a little early to mention the “C word”, but we want to make sure it’s in everyone’s minds before calendars get too busy!).

To help us shape plans for the year ahead, we’d love feedback from families who were part of the school community in 2024/25. Please take a moment to share your reflections on last year’s PTA events by filling in our short survey: https://tinyurl.com/ptasurvey25.

Finally, in next week’s newsletter we’ll be introducing the new Core PTA Team for this year, along with updates on some exciting parent-led initiatives. And don’t forget — the PTA Handbook is full of useful information, so if you haven’t had a chance to read it yet, we encourage you to do so.

Highlights

Pupil Voice

Welcome to Broomfield’s pupil voice. Here, you will find an insight from the children about their week. For our first pupil voice, Mrs Carver Williams spoke to our new joiners to check in on how they have settled into the Broomfield community. While the common thread was a love for their new teachers and friends, who have been kind and caring, some unique responses included: Ellie loving the Broomfield slide and Chef Nay’s delicious mash potatoes while Oliver enjoys the Broomfield uniform, particularly his tie that makes him feel as smart as a businessman!

The Hat Ceremony and Famous Sorting Hat

🎩 Celebrating Traditions at Broomfield

At Broomfield, we cherish our traditions—they help create a sense of belonging, excitement, and community right from the very start of the school year. Two of our most beloved traditions involve something rather special: hats!

The Hat Ceremony

We begin the year by welcoming our new starters with a gentle introduction to school life. Before the rest of the pupils return, our newest children arrive in their full Broomfield uniform, proudly wearing their school hats for the very first time. It’s a joyful moment where they meet their teachers, connect with other new starters, and hear all about the adventures that await them. It’s a lovely way to start their Broomfield journey and begin building friendships and confidence.

🧙‍♂️ The Sorting Hat Tradition

For our Year 2 pupils, the excitement continues with our much-anticipated Sorting Hat ceremony—an event that holds a touch of magic and echoes a certain well-known wizarding tale. Each child eagerly awaits to discover which school house they’ll be joining for the next five years. As the Sorting Hat makes its decision, cheers and applause errupt from across the year groups. It’s especially heartwarming to see siblings hoping to continue family house traditions, adding an extra layer of excitement and pride.

These traditions are more than just fun—they’re part of what makes Broomfield feel like home.
