HOT WEATHER

As the hot weather has arrived, we would like to remind parents that it is crucial that sun cream is applied to your child before they come to school. All children need to have their sports hats in order to be outside for breaktime, lunchtime and Games. The office has given out lots of spares this week and wants to remind everyone that we have a limited number and that sharing hats is not the best practise so please ensure each child has their own.

On very hot days, the children will be allowed to remove their ties while at school. They should still wear their tie to school every morning.

Highlights

Year 2 Legoland Trip

Year 2 burst into Legoland with excitement on Monday morning. The sun was shining, and so were the children’s smiles! We began our day with a scenic ride on The Hill Train, which took us into the heart of the park. From there, we split into three groups and rotated through four exciting areas: Lego City, Lego Mythica, Kingdom of the Pharaohs, and Lego Ninjago World. Two rides were clear favourites. The first was the exhilarating Flight of the Sky Lion, where we experienced the UK’s first-ever flying theatre! We joined Maximus on a thrilling expedition through magical realms, soaring in a gondola that swung and tilted while a 20-metre-high curved screen brought the adventure to life. There were squeals of delight—and a few screams of fear from Mrs Thompson—as we flew through cliff faces, fire, and fantastical lands! Another highlight was Lego Ninjago The Ride. Using 4D effects like heat, wind, and smoke—and incredible Maestro hand gesture technology—children could throw fireballs, shockwaves, ice, and lightning with just their hands. A dream come true for our young ninjas! Between rides, we enjoyed a delicious packed lunch from Chef Nay, and the beautiful weather made the day even more special. Most importantly, we loved spending time with our friends and making unforgettable memories. A huge thank you to our wonderful parent helpers—Mrs Puri, Ms Shaffu, and Mrs Ismail. We couldn’t have done it without you (or your patience on repeated rides!).

PK Forest School

Pre-Kindergarten had a gloriously sunny morning at Syon Park last Friday. They explored the meadows full of the most amazing wildflowers, butterflies and bees, collecting natural materials to create colourful canvases before toasting marshmallows around the camp fire!

Year 3 Pizza Express

Year 3 had an exciting trip to Pizza Express, where they became mini chefs for the day! The children learned about different ingredients and how to make a delicious pizza from scratch. Each student rolled out their own dough, spread the tomato sauce, sprinkled cheese, and added toppings of their choice. The staff were friendly and guided everyone through the fun, hands-on experience. Once the pizzas were baked, the children enjoyed tasting their creations. It was a fantastic trip that combined learning with fun, and everyone went home with full tummies and big smiles after a day they won’t forget.

General Knowledge Quiz

On Wednesday, Mead, Palmer and Rose houses each put up teams of three Year 6 pupils in the annual BHS General Knowledge Competition, in front of a lively audience of pupils and staff. The teams themselves were the result of intense competition between pupils in Year 6.
A daunting tsunami of challenging questions rained down on the contestants, ranging across famous brand logos, movies and their famous songs, a photo round of images (e.g. landmarks, politicians, flowers, sports people) and quickfire “fastest on the buzzer” questions on science, history, geography, the arts and current affairs.

The team left standing in first place at the final whistle, to their and their supporters’ utter jubilation and in a new record score of 46 for the competition, was Rose House (Remy, Ela and Kobe), with Mead (Sophia, Charlotte B and Sienna) on 43 and Palmer 42 (Zach, Victor and Arnav).

Congratulations to all the teams who showed great determination and resilience as they battled it out and their classmates who rallied in support.  A fun morning for the whole school!

Unwind with Music Event

On Tuesday 17th June and Thursday 19th June we launched our first ever ‘Unwind with music’ recitals at Broomfield. The idea behind these recitals, is to offer our Broomfield children more performance opportunities in different settings in the school.

There was a lovely atmosphere in the music room for both recitals and the children performed really well. Thank you to all parents and staff who came long to support the children. We hope to host many more of these recitals in the future.

Year 1 Trip to Bocketts Farm

Year 1 had a quacking good time in the glorious sunshine at Bocketts Farm. They enjoyed a tractor ride with Farmer Amy, met newborn goats and sheep in the big barn and got to feed lots of animals throughout our animal encounter session. The highlight of the trip was watching the pig race where Snoop Hogg stole the show. A huge thank you to our daddies, Mr Bickerstaffe, Mr Williams and Mr Fernandez-Ares who were invaluable on the day and arguably had even more fun than the children!

UK Trust Junior Maths Challenge

Year 6 mathematicians every year participate in the UK Maths Trust Junior Maths Challenge (JMC), a high-level and difficult one hour maths test over 25 questions. The JMC is actually targeted at years 6-8, and it is an enormous credit to our pupils that they do well.
This year, we had four pupils who did so well in the JMC that they were invited to participate in the higher level Junior Maths Kangaroo competition (so called because it was inspired by Australian mathematicians!) Congratulations therefore go to Charlotte B, Ela, Claudia, and Gusti. All four have now completed the Junior Kangaroo paper and performed with great credit. A special mention goes to Charlotte B who, by achieving over 80% was awarded a Golden Kangaroo certificate. To the best of our knowledge this is the first time that anyone at Broomfield has achieved this accolade.

Art this Week

Pre-Kindergarten created chicken collages, experimenting with the combination of oil pastel and watercolour. They practised their skills while reflecting on patterns and colour combinations.

Cicero National Debating Cup Final

On Friday 13th June the BHS Y5/Y6 debating team travelled to the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich for the 2025 Cicero National Debating cup final. The ability to debate well is a great skill that prepares us for life and its many challenges. Starting young is a wonderful opportunity that we now offer to more senior pupils at Broomfield, many of whom will join debating clubs in the secondary schools/universities to which they go.

Broomfield (Adil, Lewis, Hamish, Tara, Anushka, Zach) pitched themselves against some of the very best school debating teams in the country in an intense day of matching wits and debating skills. The debates we were involved in were on whether mankind should try to bring back extinct species, and whether government should pay parents to stay at home to raise their young children.

This was the third year in succession that BHS had reached the finals, the only school to achieve that distinction. Some of those qualifying debates were done online, which is fine but never as satisfying as seeing the whites of your opponent’s eyes in live face-to-face debate! In the end, we did not make it through to the final two, but had a brilliant day and learned a lot. A special congratulation goes to Hamish who was singled out in the awards ceremony as one of the two Star Debaters of the day!
