Debating skills are a wonderful way of developing children’s ability to use the English language with confidence, skill and purpose. As part of our aim to nurture this valuable skill at Broomfield, we will send a team later this month to participate in an eight-school debating competition at Ibstock Place School. Ahead of that event, this week saw both Years 4 and 5 participating in intensive learning sessions run by the Noisy Classroom company, on the skills and protocols of organised debating. Mr Kennedy who runs our debating activities says that the children revealed massively impressive and, in some cases, unexpected and combative debating skills, with the ability to switch instantly between both sides of a subject. The sessions were tremendous fun and totally engaging, suggesting that Broomfield has a hugely talented crop of expert debaters.
