Extra-Curricular

Prep school is an ideal time for children to explore a variety of activities, as one may become a lifelong passion that brings them joy and fulfillment. At Broomfield House School, we are proud to offer a diverse range of clubs to nurture these interests.

Many of our clubs are provided free of charge during the school day, while others have a fee. All after-school clubs run from 3:30 pm to 4:30 pm, with the exception of the Art Club, which concludes at 5:00 pm. For added convenience, After School Care is available until 5:30 pm.

Some of the Clubs available to the children are listed below:

Art

Our artist-in-residence offers Art Clubs after school and during lunchtimes for children in Years 1 to 6. The children work across a range of exciting media and themes to enhance the established variety and range of art activities on offer during school time.

On Mondays the session is aimed specifically at children in Y4 – Y6 focusing on more complex projects such as acrylic painting on canvas, watercolour techniques, observational drawing, sketchbook work, as well as some clay and papier-mâché work. This club will encourage the children to explore art in more depth and give interested children the opportunity to enter competitions, prepare scholarships and portfolios.

Multisport

In partnership with Brentford Community Sports Trust, our Multi-Sport club consists of a different sport every week, which enables children to participate in activities they may not usually try. Sports include Basketball, Tag-Rugby, Handball, Tennis and much more! This specific sports club enables children to participate and improve in a chosen sport. Children will learn and practice different techniques throughout the session which will help them develop their fundamental skill.

Chamber Choir

Children in Year 4 to 6 can audition for the Chamber Choir. This is an opportunity for older children to further develop the ability to sing in parts and to explore more advanced repertoire. The Choir performs a variety of music and often takes a leading role in the Senior Carol Service. It also performs at various community and other school events. (free club)

Chess

Our chess club not only fosters strategic thinking and problem-solving skills but also encourages teamwork and mentoring across year groups. With a combination of individual competitions, house tournaments and leadership roles like the Year 6 Chess Captain and Prefects the club adds much value to the pupils’ experience.  Integrating chess into the school culture in turn supports cognitive development whilst promoting social bonds. A drop-in club children can attend as and when they please. (free club)

Cookery

Bake and Play is a unique Ofsted approved after school cookery club operated by Dolce Senso.

Each week, the club introduces children to a new cooking experience, giving them the opportunity to practice valuable skills while having fun. Through hands-on activities like chopping and mixing, children enhance their fine motor skills, coordination, and dexterity.

The program also focuses on nutritional education, teaching the importance of fresh ingredients and healthy eating habits. By offering a supportive environment for children of all abilities, Bake and Play aims to foster both practical cooking skills and a deeper understanding of nutrition, encouraging a lifelong love for healthy food.

Dance

At Dance Club, students explore a variety of styles, focusing on contemporary and hip-hop. Each session enhances their technique, coordination, and creativity while building confidence and teamwork. In preparation for the Big Dance Off Competition in the spring term, dancers learn a group choreography each week, and work to develop their performance abilities and stage presence. It is a fun and relaxed environment where the children are encouraged to express themselves authentically.

LAMDA

LAMDA is open to students in Years 3 – 6.  The club provides a nurturing environment where young performers can develop their skills, build lasting friendships, and discover the joy of theatrical expression. Students embark on an exciting journey into the world of performance and creativity. Each session is designed to cultivate essential skills such as confidence, teamwork, and self-expression. Children engage in various activities, including improvisation, character development, and script analysis. This allows them to explore the different aspects of acting.

Through enjoyable games and structured exercises, they learn to project their voices, use body language effectively, and understand the importance of storytelling. The club prepares the children for examinations held in the summer term, where students can demonstrate their talents. This fosters a huge sense of accomplishment and pride. The examination framework helps them to gain a deeper understanding of drama theory and technique.

Fencing

Fencing takes place on Tuesday afternoons after school and is proving to be ever more popular. A fun and enriching environment where our pupils can learn a unique sport whilst encouraging strength, agility and coordination.  The club is run by Marion Nemitz who focuses on a range of drills including footwork, lunges and blade work with emphasis on both individual skill and pair drills to foster teamwork. Fun games enhance the children’s agility, coordination and speed and Marion stages in-house competitions within the group and external British Fencing accreditations.

Football

We offer after-school Football Clubs for different age groups, focusing on developing ball skills and fostering a love for the game. These clubs are led by coaches from Brentford FC Community Sports Trust, alongside our dedicated teaching staff. Younger children practice at school, while older students enjoy their sessions at our Sports Field in Old Deer Park, next to Kew Gardens. Through these clubs, children develop their football talents, preparing them for future opportunities in competitive matches.

Lego

Our Deputy Head leads the LEGO Club in the library during Monday morning break. This club offers children from Kindergarten upwards the opportunity to unleash their creativity by building individually or collaboratively. They are encouraged to bring their imaginations to life, and completed creations are photographed and occasionally showcased during assembly.

Often, children use LEGO to recreate concepts they’ve learned in class, adding a fun, hands-on dimension to their learning. In 2019, a Year 4 group earned the Detail and Design award in the LEGO League Junior program for their impressive Space Base, complete with a jacuzzi! (free club)

Netball

Netball Club is held after school and is open to Years 5 and 6. During the autumn and winter terms, players work on their ball skills, tactical moves and fitness with the focus moving to game play in spring and summer. Netball is a strong sport at Broomfield with teams qualifying for the ISA National Finals in 2023 and 2024. Broomfield won the ISA Netball National Bowl final in 2023.

Orchestra

Orchestra is an option available to children from Year 3 – 6 who have individual instrumental lessons at Broomfield. Children who have instrumental lessons outside school are also warmly encouraged to join. Children grow in their love of music and come to understand and experience for themselves the joy of collective music making. The orchestra also performs at school assemblies and festivities, and it is a great way for children to perform alongside other musicians. (free club)

Pythagorus

Years 5 and 6 enjoy the weekly challenge of Pythagoras Club, the maths problem-solving club which is run at lunchtimes by Mr Kennedy. The children dissect complex maths problems, first seeking solutions individually and then, if needed, pooling efforts with others in pursuit of a solution. They develop the skills involved in analysing problems, finding entry points and working through to correct solutions.  The best bit, according to pupils, is when a “lightbulb moment” occurs, when the way to a solution suddenly and excitingly pops into the child’s brain. “Eureka!” (free club)

Science

Most children love hands-on, practical science and our club offers many opportunities for this. Investigations with light and prisms, creating bottle rockets, competing to make enormous towers and pond-dipping for wildlife are a few examples of our fun and educational sessions. Science is such an important part of the school curriculum and these extra sessions offer many opportunities for exciting practical experiments.

Spanish Club

Spanish Club is taken by Mrs Ali, our resident languages teacher and is available to children in Years 3-5. Children can use the computers to practise their Spanish using the online resource The Language Gym, playing games while building their vocabulary and learning to make sentences. There are also some Spanish reading books available for those children that enjoy a good book. (free club)

Technokids

For the children motivated by the wonders of new technology we are delighted to have Technokids in school to deliver Computing sessions after school. Technokids have been running their technology club at Broomfield for over 20 years! The sessions focus on developing digital literacy, creative computing and coding skills in a fun, social context. Most recently they have introduced LEGO robotics running in tandem with coding and digital literacy. This involves building and coding a range of innovative LEGO models using motors, sensors and bluetooth connections improving their engineering skills.

A different set of tech comes into school each term, including laptops, iPads, programmable robots and more. The tutors teach a variety of modules designed to support the Computing curriculum for Key Stages 1 & 2.

Technokids at Broomfield is administered directly by Bruce Harrison at: www.technokids.co.uk

Umbrella - Homework Club

Our Umbrella Club provides a fantastic opportunity for children who prefer to finish their homework before going home. Pupils in Years 3-6 complete their homework with the guidance of a supportive staff member. This way, when they get home, they are free to play, relax, and enjoy their evening without the pressure of unfinished homework.

The Inventors

Inventors club focuses on STEM subjects. It is aimed at children between the ages of 6-11 (Y2-6). In each session the kids are able to make a project that focuses on teaching them a complex scientific topic through play and craft. The topics can range from everywhere between engineering to magnetics and from sound to electronics.  Once the project is completed, the children get to take it home.

Mandarin

Mandarin club focuses on familiarising children with Mandarin through a combination of lessons, songs and activities to help them build both confidence and interest in learning a new language. The lessons are tailored to their capabilities and use specially designed, customised materials to cover the fundamentals at the beginner/non-Mandarin speaker level, with an emphasis on pronunciation, reading & writing when moving to the next stages. This is available currently to children in Kindergarten to Year 2.

Running Club

Working with the renowned Kate Staples, former Gladiator and British record holder! Kate and her expert team are dedicated to helping children improve their running skills through specialised running drills, conditioning exercises, speed training, and endurance building. This club is not just about training; it’s also about having lots of fun whilst working towards running goals. (summer term only)

Time Travellers

One of our most popular clubs, each session enables the children to embark on weekly historical adventures, examine artefacts, discuss historical sources and travel back in time to discover what makes us who we are. Sessions include a Knights Training Club, Code Breaker Academy, Olympic Game Day and a Time Traveller Showcase. Each session is not just fun but also a rich educational experience.

Eco Club

Eco Club aims to help pupils understand the importance of protecting the environment and learn how they can make a difference and also educate others. This weekly club covers a range of activities from air pollution experiments, nature observations, energy and waste monitoring, building insect homes to participating in national and global awareness events. Helping the pupils of Broomfield House School be planet heroes, the Eco Club members learn about the environmental problems of today and how they can take action to ensure the future of tomorrow.
