Sustainability

At Broomfield House School we care about the environment and the future of the planet for our children. Sustainability and our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint sits at the forefront in our educational goals.

In line with the outcomes of COP we look to continuously invest in actions to reduce our own impact on global warming, embrace technology that will allow us to monitor our carbon emissions and work to protect our planet through actions great and small.

In 2024 we achieved The Planet Mark Business Certification, which is a widely recognised symbol of sustainability progress. It demonstrates our commitment to measuring and reducing our carbon emissions, ultimately contributing to our environmental, social and governance (ESG) criteria. The certification means that we can confidently report on the steps we are taking, and the progress being made to protect our planet and work towards being a net zero school.

We also work closely with Transport for London and have an established travel plan in place meaning we are able to demonstrate at least 90% of pupils and staff travel to school using public transport, or by cycling, scooting or walking to school each day. Our travel plan is designed to inspire others to transform travel habits, fully engage our wider community to promote best practices, and see a measurable reduction in the number of journeys made by car every day.

Again for 2023-2024 we are delighted to have been awarded the TfL Travel for Life accreditation Gold Star, the highest level of accreditation.

Eco-Schools Award

Last year, we were also thrilled to be awarded the Eco-Schools Green Flag, a prestigious recognition of our school’s dedication to sustainability and environmental action. We know that environmental challenges like climate change, biodiversity loss, and plastic pollution can feel overwhelming, but through the Eco-Schools programme, our children have discovered that small, meaningful actions can lead to big changes. By following the programme’s seven-step framework and focusing on topics such as biodiversity, waste, and energy, our school community has worked together to make a positive impact on our environment. This award celebrates our collective efforts and reflects our commitment to empowering young people to take action for a greener, healthier planet.

Reforestation

For every new pupil joining our school, we plant one tree in the Scottish Highlands in partnership with Trees for Life. This initiative helps restore native forests, supporting biodiversity and combating climate change. We aim to inspire our pupils to value and protect the natural world, leaving a positive legacy for future generations.

Together, we are making a difference – one tree at a time.
