Nursery Learning Journey

At Broomfield House School, we believe that every moment is a learning opportunity. From the pages of a favorite storybook to the wonder of nature’s classroom, our holistic approach ensures children feel supported, challenged, and inspired.

Our curriculum combines traditional subjects with innovative programmes like our Little Leaders Programme, fostering critical skills like collaboration, resilience, and curiosity.

Reading and Literacy

We love stories and reading! We embed books and tales into every aspect of our curriculum to ensure children are exploring stories at every turn. We use a selection of fiction and non-fiction key texts to develop children’s understanding of story language and support their comprehension.

Phonics teaching begins in Pre-Kindergarten where children build foundations of phonetic awareness through listening and attention activities. Pre-Kindergarten explores rhyming, alliteration and oral blending and segmenting before starting our very successful Read Write Inc phonics programme, which continues into Kindergarten and Key Stage 1. Daily RWI sessions build a strong foundation for reading and writing. Our literacy lessons aim to teach children to express themselves effectively and to apply their phonic knowledge to purposeful reading and writing experiences.

Mathematics

Maths is everywhere! As with all our learning, we aim to make maths fun hand-on experiences. We focus on the foundation skills of counting, fostering a deep understanding of numbers and numerical patterns. Our maths curriculum encompasses shapes, patterns and measures to explore the world around us in meaningful contexts, such as growing and measuring beanstalks. We encourage children to explain their thinking using and modelling mathematical vocabulary every day.

Little Leaders Programme

Complementing our regular syllabus, Broomfield’s Little Leaders programme celebrates the softer skills and positive behaviours that we know set our children up for success as they move into a more formal education in the coming years. These skills, such as taking turns, helping others, listening to instructions, trying new experiences and enjoying a challenge, are developed and show themselves differently with each individual child.

Outdoor Learning

Outdoor learning is vital for young children as it promotes physical development, enhances creativity, and nurtures a connection with nature. It also encourages problem-solving, social interaction, and sensory exploration, all of which support cognitive and emotional growth in early childhood. With this in mind, we put a strong emphasis on mirroring our indoor curriculum in our wonderful bespoke outdoor provision, accessed daily by all children.

Our Early Years and Key Stage One children also benefit from regular Forest School sessions both in school and at Syon Park. These sessions aim to re-connect children with nature, through bushcraft, natural craft and play. Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten children also enjoy a range of trips and visits to find out more about our community and the world around us. Excursions include, PICNIC role-play experience, local theatres, Holly Lodge, making pizza at Pizza Express, farm and Zoo Lab visits and of course, the wonderful Kew Gardens!

Music and Drama

In addition to daily songs integrated into their routine, Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten children have regular Music lessons with the school’s specialist Music teacher, where they enjoy movement, nursery rhymes, and simple songs that support language development and build confidence. They also participate in performances such as the Harvest Festival Assembly and a Christmas play, showcasing their progress and teamwork. Early Years children have weekly Drama lessons that explore engaging themes like Fairy Tales and Pirate Adventures, encouraging self-expression through speech, facial expressions, and body language. They recite rhymes and poems for events like National Poetry Day and perform in class productions, each with their own spoken lines, fostering creativity and independence.

PE and Dance

As well as the many active sessions the class teachers run as part of the curriculum the classes also enjoy PE and Dance lessons with our specialist teachers. The PE activities are designed to build core body strength, balance and spatial awareness.  We teach them to move in different ways; shaping their bodies to improve flexibility, running, skipping and changing directions while sprinting to develop control. Playing with balls, hoops and bean bags we help them develop hand to eye coordination and gross and fine motor skills.

In Dance the children love moving to music, getting into the beat and beginning to express emotion through movement. Dance works wonders with the children in developing balance and coordination.

Art

In addition to the Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten art and craft activities in class, the children participate in a weekly art lesson taught by our specialist teacher. These lessons primarily focus on developing dexterity and hand-eye coordination. Early Years children are introduced to a wide variety of materials and spend time exploring fundamental art skills. They work extensively with ink and gouache paint, honing their brush control and enhancing their understanding of visual expression. Lessons include exploring the representation of the human body, animal shapes, and plants, as well as integrating the work of famous artists. Additionally, the sessions nurture the children’s imagination and foster their aesthetic sensitivity.

Languages

Our Languages teacher begins Spanish lessons with the children in the Kindergarten class.
