Early Years ILE Programme

At Broomfield House School, we value each child as an individual and strive to help them grow into the best version of themselves. We believe that every child’s learning journey is unique, and we are committed to nurturing their strengths, addressing their challenges, and fostering their confidence. Our Individual Learning Enhancement (ILE) Programme lies at the heart of this approach. It provides a carefully structured, responsive framework that allows us to identify, support, and extend pupils’ learning needs—academically, socially, and emotionally.

The ILE Programme is not reserved for those who need additional help alone. Rather, it is a vehicle through which we personalise learning for all our pupils. We recognise that children may need support in some areas and stretch in others, and our job is to respond dynamically and with sensitivity. This tailored approach ensures that all children are given every opportunity to reach their full potential, to build a strong sense of self-belief, and to experience success on their own terms.

In our Early Years classes, this commitment to individual learning begins from day one. With high staff-to-pupil ratios, children benefit from being supported in small groups, enabling us to get to know them incredibly well and to meet their needs sensitively and promptly. Each child’s development is reviewed regularly through termly class review meetings, where class teachers and the Head of ILE work collaboratively to monitor progress, celebrate successes, and identify next steps. These reviews help to inform any additional support that may be needed and ensure that the learning journey for every child is both consistent and responsive.

For children for whom English is an Additional Language (EAL), teachers and assistant teachers work closely with them, helping to build their speaking, listening, and comprehension skills quickly and effectively. This support is sensitively integrated into classroom life.

The ILE Programme also encompasses enrichment opportunities for those children who show particular aptitude in areas such as maths, reading, or the arts. Further up in the school we provide challenge groups and differentiated learning tasks which allow gifted pupils to explore their interests in greater depth. This ensures that children are consistently stimulated and engaged, developing the independence and resilience they will need as lifelong learners.

We place great emphasis on developing metacognitive skills—helping children understand how they learn best. Through reflective practices, goal setting, and formative feedback, pupils are encouraged to take ownership of their learning, to become more self-aware, and to develop strategies for overcoming challenges.

Importantly, our ILE approach does not operate in isolation. It is deeply embedded into the culture of the school and reinforced through strong relationships between staff, pupils, and parents. We believe that a successful learning journey is built on clear communication and collaboration, and we welcome ongoing dialogue with families to ensure that each child feels seen, supported, and celebrated.

At Broomfield House School, the ILE Programme reflects our deeply held belief that learning is not one-size-fits-all. It is our role to unlock each child’s potential through thoughtful, flexible and caring support. When children feel understood and empowered, they develop the confidence to take risks, the resilience to persevere, and the joy that comes from knowing their learning is truly their own. Our aim is for every pupil to feel a deep sense of belonging, value, and purpose within our school community, knowing they are supported not only to succeed, but to thrive.
