A Personalised Approach to Learning Support
At Broomfield House School, we value each child as an individual and strive to help them develop as the people they are. Unique to Broomfield, our Individual Learning Enhancement (ILE) Programme is the vehicle through which we identify and support pupils’ differing needs. The aim is to maximise both the potential and the actual achievements of our pupils with the holistic education we provide. We are committed to giving all our children every opportunity to achieve the highest of standards and offer a personalised approach to enhance their learning and help them flourish.
Reviewing Progress
Our approach is to track every child’s progress closely and plan support, consolidation, or extension intervention as appropriate. Through termly class review meetings, the class teacher and Head of ILE jointly review progress and revise provision to meet the individual needs of each child. ILE support is provided on an individual basis or in small groups as appropriate.
The Head of ILE is a qualified SENCO and is responsible for looking after the needs of the children identified as having special educational needs and/or disabilities, including those children with an Individual Education Plan or Education, Health and Care Plan.
Enrichment
We are delighted to have many gifted children in school. Extended provision is made for them within the classroom. We also provide enrichment activities to promote their skills still further, managed through the ILE Programme. Our provision for these pupils aims to improve achievement by giving appropriate challenges and is rooted in the notion of ‘developing expertise’, whilst paying close attention to every child to encourage a positive mindset.
Differentiated and Inclusive Learning
ILE is central to our commitment to differentiated learning. In each lesson, teachers implement tiered planning and varied activities so that every pupil—from those needing extra support, to those who thrive on challenge—can participate meaningfully. This inclusive approach reflects best practice in primary education, where targeted differentiation and small-group instruction enhance learning outcomes and support equity across achievement levels.
Evidence-Based Enrichment
Research shows that structured enrichment activities—such as research-led projects and problem-solving challenges—benefit all pupils, not just the most able. Through the ILE programme, our pupils engage in creative mathematics investigations, cross-curricular projects, and specialist workshops, which help foster deeper understanding and higher-order thinking. This fosters metacognition—helping children become aware of their learning process, set goals, and monitor their progress—leading to stronger motivation, self-regulation, and intellectual confidence.
Collaboration: Head of ILE & Teachers
Inclusive learning depends on strong partnership between the Head of ILE and class teachers. Regular communication ensures that each child’s targeted plan is aligned with classroom expectations and broader school provision. This collaborative model also supports teachers’ professional development, ensuring they grow in expertise and confidence in delivering inclusive lessons that meet diverse needs.
Measuring Success
Success in ILE is measured through continuous monitoring—not only academic results but also pupil engagement, confidence, emotional resilience, and social development.
Designing for the Future
Beyond immediate progress, ILE fosters attitudes and skills to benefit pupils long-term. They learn to ask questions, seek feedback, embrace challenge, and persevere—all hallmarks of lifelong learners. By equipping pupils with self-awareness, strategic thinking, and emotional resilience, we prepare them to thrive in future educational and personal challenges.
In Summary
The ILE Programme is much more than an intervention structure—it represents our belief that education must be personalised, inclusive, and growth-oriented. By combining careful identification of needs, responsive provision, evidence-based enrichment, cross-staff collaboration, and ongoing review, we ensure every child is supported to flourish. At Broomfield House, we celebrate each child’s journey to academic success, personal growth, and engagement with learning.
