On Thursday 5th February 2026, we will be visited by local children’s author and parent at Broomfield House School, Yasmine Anane, for a talk about her new book called The Family Tree to children from R3’s to Y2. The Family Tree is a heartwarming tale celebrating kindness, inclusion and, above all, the beauty of differences.
All Books will be provided by The Kew Bookshop. If you would like to order your book in advance please click on this link: The Family Tree. Yasmine will be signing any purchased copies.
“When Mole sets off in search of his family tree, he discovers that true family and friendship aren’t about looking the same – they’re about the love we share with those around us. This heartwarming story celebrates kindness, inclusion, and the beauty of our differences, making it perfect for bedtime reading”
It promises to be a wonderful experience for the children in R3’s through to Year 2 and will hopefully encourage their love of reading.
We are very lucky to live and learn in an area close to the River Thames, which is a wonderful part of our local environment. However, we would like to remind families about the importance of water safety, especially during cold weather. Rivers and icy water are extremely dangerous, cold water shock can happen in water below 15°C and the Thames is often much colder in winter. The River Thames typically drops to between 3°C and 9°C (37°F – 48°F) during January and February. Please remind children never to go near rivers or onto ice and if someone does fall into cold water, they should lie on their back and float to help them stay safe.

The match will be held at Brentford’s GTECH Community Stadium and will feature Gotham FC vs Corinthians FC, with England Lioness Jess Carter taking part. This is a wonderful opportunity for the children to experience high-level women’s football and to watch elite athletes competing on an international stage, which we hope will be both inspiring and memorable.

Nutrition has a profound and lifelong impact on a child’s health. As they grow rapidly – physically, mentally, and emotionally, what they eat directly shapes how their bodies and brains develop. Proper nutrition supports brain growth, memory, attention, and learning ability. Emma Brooks, Nutritional Therapist Dip.NT mFNTP, will talk to us about how we can support our children through diet.

Looking for something a bit different? We have been zooming all over town to seek out some lesser-known gems for you to explore. Enjoy discovering these historic and slightly odd new finds with your families.

Over the Christmas break, Year 5 completed their World War One trench diaries to an exceptionally high standard. Mrs Wrigley-Smith described them as the best cohort yet! Special congratulations go to Magnus and Ella, who received Gold Star awards for their outstanding effort along with five house points.
Year 6 have started their new essay topic on discursive essay writing and how to present balanced and alternative viewpoints. The children have been exploring Ted Hughes’ The Iron Man, and engaged in a lively debate about whether the Iron Man should be treated as a living being or a machine. Pupils shared thoughtful arguments, listened respectfully to different viewpoints and demonstrated impressive critical thinking skills.
This week in History, Mrs Wrigley-Smith sent Year 3 on a Greek God treasure hunt! Solving clues and finding hidden ‘Gods’ led the class all over the school, from the dining hall (Demeter), Hephaestus (Art room) and even Mr Anstey’s office (Zeus)!
Kindergarten had a fantastic time during their session with the amazing Red Beard Forest School last Friday! They spent the morning learning how to safely chop wood and light fires. Everyone had fun taking turns in putting what they had learnt into practice.
In maths this week, the children have been using their knowledge of shape to create their own 3D shapes from paper straws and tape. The children worked together to create their amazing classroom shape display which they then showcased at the parent coffee morning. In English, we have been writing their own playscripts and then performed them to the rest of the class. The children learnt how to write a playscript using features such as character names, stage directions and scenes.
Year 1 looked at symmetry and designed snowmen in the corners of a square sheet of paper. The children reflected on shape and detail, practised their felt-tip skills and created some eye-catching drawings.
This week we were making bird feeders – the RSPB’S Big Bird Count takes places this weekend 23-25 January. We followed the instructions attached but a nut-free version – so lard, raisins and breadcrumbs. Being Eco club, we also swapped the plastic cups for recycled paper cups. The children decorated their cups to ensure they stood out and attracted the birds, and took them home. (Image of Bela (Y5) and her sister Emilia (Y1) with their feeders.
I have attached the instructions for the bird feeders for those that would like to make them at home, and Eco Club would encourage everyone to head to the RSPB website and take an hour out of their weekend to take part in the Big Bird Count: https://www.rspb.org.uk
Weather permitting, next week Eco Club will be taking part in the Big Schools’ bird count.
